About Greenwich High School Model United Nations
Besides being a glorious addition to any résumé, MUN is, at its core, a club, full of opportunities to make friends and learn about the world. The MUN community at GHS is the school’s largest and one of the most closely-knit. Older members love winning at conferences only as much as they love mentoring newer members and watching them win. The camaraderie is best seen at these conferences: from group debriefs at night to sing-alongs on the bus ride back, the main reason that members love MUN is because of the people.
The GHS Model UN Team provides many extra opportunities for education. Besides the Monday afternoon meetings in Room 900, members can come to Mr. Tiedemann’s room on Tuesday mornings to practice speaking in a small room or contribute to the newsletter and investigate international headlines. They can compete in the school’s own conference, GHSMUN, in both September and April of every school year. They can go up to anybody they met in the club and start complaining about the election in some eastern European nation and trust that the conversation will continue and be entertaining.
Many of the former members of GHSMUN have created legacies at the school and continue to do so after graduation, competing at the college level and majoring in a variety of subjects including IR and Law. Many will attend universities with the top MUN teams in the U.S., including UChicago, Georgetown, and Harvard. And they always remain proud of having made their start on the GHS Model UN team. They may have started as freshman or sophomores or even as late as upperclassmen, but they will still often return to speak on their experiences in college and provide advice for the newest batch.
GHSMUN is an illustrious inheritance, and Mr. Tiedemann, the leadership, and all the other members can’t wait to see to whom it will be passed on.
